Questions 31–40 | Answers & Explanations

Separating correct answers from correct reasoning.

Round 4 of the learning experiment with Lab Mouse No. 001, preparing for Japan's Applied Information Technology Engineer Examination (AP).

We assess not just whether an answer is right, but whether the reasoning is sound.

These questions were reconstructed from the learning record. The recorded score reflects the original session, not a fresh grading of this reconstructed question set. Exact wording and options of the original questions have not been independently verified.

Q31 | Networking

Correct answer: B. NAT

NAT (Network Address Translation) translates IP addresses. A home router may translate between private and public IP addresses. DNS, by contrast, looks up IP addresses associated with domain names.

Recorded response: A — Incorrect. Reason: “Because it's an address.”

Key lesson: Distinguish technologies by what they do, not merely by words in their names.

Q32 | Binary Numbers

Correct answer: C. 22

Binary 10110 uses place values 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1: 16×1 + 8×0 + 4×1 + 2×1 + 1×0 = 22.

Recorded response: C — Correct. The learner wrote out the place-value calculation.

Key lesson: Convert binary by adding the values of the positions containing a 1.

Q33 | Conditional Expressions

Correct answer: C. Ages 75 and 72

age >= 70 means “age is at least 70.” Among ages 65, 75, 68 and 72, only 75 and 72 meet the condition. > means greater than; >= includes the boundary value.

Recorded response: C — Correct. Reason: “70 or older.”

Key lesson: Translate expressions into everyday language.

Q34 | Information Security

Correct answer: A. Social engineering

Social engineering exploits human trust, fear or behavior to obtain sensitive information or induce unauthorized actions. For example, someone may impersonate an employee to request a password.

Recorded response: B — Incorrect. The learner arrived at the choice by elimination.

Key lesson: People, not only computer systems, can be targets of security attacks.

Q35 | Logical Operations

Correct answer: B. No notification is sent

The condition requires temperature ≥30°C AND humidity ≥80%. Temperature 32°C passes, but humidity 75% fails. Since AND requires both conditions to be true, no notification is sent.

Recorded response: B — Correct. Reason: “The AND condition isn't satisfied.”

Key lesson: AND requires both conditions; OR requires at least one.

Q36 | Backups

Correct answer: B. Incremental backup

A full backup copies all selected data. An incremental backup saves changes since the previous backup; a differential backup saves changes since the most recent full backup. Restoration from incrementals generally requires the full backup plus the necessary incremental backups in sequence.

Recorded response: B — Correct. Reason: “Changes since the previous backup.”

Key lesson: Consider how data is restored, not only how it is saved.

Q37 | Processing Performance

Correct answer: C. 80 seconds

Original total: 200 seconds. Accelerated portion: 150 ÷ 5 = 30 seconds. Unchanged portion: 200 − 150 = 50 seconds. New total: 30 + 50 = 80 seconds.

Recorded response: C — Correct, but the written calculation was (200−150)/50 + (200−150), which does not yield 80.

Important observation: A correct choice does not necessarily mean the calculation was correct. Record answer accuracy and reasoning accuracy separately.

Q38 | Anomaly Detection

Correct answer: C. False positive

A false positive is an alarm when no anomaly exists. A false negative is a missed anomaly. A true positive correctly detects an anomaly; a true negative correctly recognizes a normal state.

Recorded response: C — Correct. Reason: “Intuition.”

Key lesson: A false positive is a false alarm; a false negative is a miss.

Q39 | System Reliability

Correct answer: A. Redundancy

Redundancy provides backup components or paths so that a system can continue operating after certain failures. For example, a second server may take over when the first fails. Shared power or network infrastructure can still create single points of failure.

Recorded response: A — Correct, chosen by elimination.

Key lesson: Redundancy does not prevent every failure; it helps maintain service when particular components fail.

Q40 | Evaluating Anomaly Detection

Correct answer: A. Recall: 90%

Recall measures how many actual anomalies were detected: 90 correctly detected out of 100 actual anomalies gives 90 ÷ 100 × 100 = 90%. Precision instead asks what proportion of issued alerts were genuine anomalies.

Recorded response: B — Incorrect. Reason: “Guess.”

Key lesson: Recall focuses on missed anomalies; precision focuses on the accuracy of alerts.

What This Round Revealed

Reasoning from mechanisms: Binary numbers, comparisons, AND conditions and incremental backups showed evidence of transferable understanding.

Terminology remains challenging: NAT and social engineering were not yet familiar.

Correct does not always mean understood: Q37 had an incorrect calculation; Q38 was intuition; Q39 was elimination.

After 40 questions, the recorded accuracy is 60%. The more important question is whether the learner can increasingly explain *why* an answer is correct.

Next checkpoint: Question 50

Review NAT, social engineering, recall and precision while introducing new topics. Track answers chosen from knowledge, reasoning, elimination and guessing separately.
