Social Vol_ratio
A prototype indicator designed to measure how much the volume of information on a particular topic has increased compared with its normal level.
Could “social volume” also rise before society itself begins to change?
01 | What Is Social Vol_ratio?
Social Vol_ratio is an original observation concept developed as part of the SOCIAL RADAR research process. It is not an established economic indicator or an official statistical measure.
Its purpose is not to make definitive predictions about the future, but to detect early where information activity has begun to deviate from its normal pattern.
02 | An Oil Example
Suppose an oil-producing region normally generates about 20 information items per week concerning opposition to oil development, new regulations, drilling permits, and related topics.
| Information Volume | Social Vol_ratio | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 20 items | 1.0 | Normal |
| 30 items | 1.5 | Slight increase |
| 40 items | 2.0 | Investigate |
| 60 items | 3.0 | Abnormal activity |
Note: 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 are provisional research thresholds. Their usefulness will be tested against accumulated real-world data.
03 | How to Read the Numbers
Continue routine observation.
Check for emerging changes.
Examine policy, investment, and related factors.
Prioritize verification of real-world changes.
04 | A Ratio of 3.0 Does Not Mean Oil Prices Will Rise
A high Social Vol_ratio does not mean that crude oil prices will rise or that supply will fall. It is an alert indicating that unusual information activity is occurring in that region or topic.
When an alert appears, the next step is to investigate why the information volume increased.
05 | One Government Announcement May Matter More Than 100 Social-Media Posts
Raw counts alone are not enough. One official government announcement suspending permits for new oil fields may have a greater impact on future production capacity than 100 opposition posts from residents or social media users.
| Factor | What to Observe |
|---|---|
| Information volume | How many times above normal? |
| Source | Government, regulators, companies, financial institutions, residents, social media |
| Direction | Does it promote or constrain development? |
| Rate of increase | Gradual growth or sudden surge? |
| Real-world confirmation | Have investment, permits, rigs, or infrastructure actually changed? |
06 | Similar to Trading Volume in the Stock Market
If trading volume suddenly increases while a stock price has barely moved, we may ask whether something is happening beneath the surface. SOCIAL RADAR applies the same idea to social information.
It is a sensor for finding where we should investigate.
07 | What We Really Want to Know About Oil
08 | Research Rules
Record the observation date, numerical value, hypothesis for the increase, falsification conditions, and subsequent real-world changes in the Flight Log. Review the outcome after three months, six months, and one year. Even failed hypotheses are retained so we can determine which signals actually work as leading indicators.
09 | In One Sentence
“An unusual amount of information has started moving through society.”
That is the idea behind Social Vol_ratio, now being tested within SOCIAL RADAR.
